Press Release – ASB Auckland Marathon

ASB Auckland Marathon a truly international event

ASB Auckland Marathon has become a truly international event, with entrants from a record number of countries and new global links.

Entries have been received from a record 63 countries this year, with the highest number of entrants outside of New Zealand being from Australia.

The ASB Auckland Marathon, which takes place on Sunday 1 November, is rated as one of the world’s top 10 city marathons by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) Chief Executive Brett O’Riley says the marathon is an important showcase for what makes Auckland special and a good opportunity for New Zealanders to participate in an international field on a stunning course.

“The marathon has become an iconic Auckland event which continues to gain an international reputation – the chance to start in a harbourside historic village like Devonport, then have a rare opportunity to cross the Auckland Harbour Bridge on foot, and then trace Auckland’s waterfront.”

Brett O’Riley says the marathon continues to forge strong international links on and off the course, with Chinese company Dalian Wanda Group purchasing the marathon parent company, in recent months.

“The Wanda Group is a global leader in real estate development, tourism and cultural experiences, and is also the world’s largest cinema chain operator, including owning the Hoyts Group. It is expanding into sports management globally with acquisitions including IRONMAN, Infront Sports & Media and a stake in the Atletico Madrid football club this year.”

“It raises the exciting potential of the promotion of endurance sports and fixtures like the ASB Auckland Marathon to a growing Chinese audience.”

The ASB Auckland Marathon is made up of five events: Full Marathon, Barfoot & Thompson Half Marathon, 12k Traverse, Heart Foundation 5k Challenge & Kids Marathon. There is still time to register to take part – go to
