Press Release – New Zealand Fabian Society

Deborah Russell – Do the Job Properly: the Case for a CGT in a Progressive Economy

The government has introduced a minimal capital gains tax, to deal with rampant property price growth in Auckland? But do we need a more extensive CGT? Should we introduce a CGT for reasons of economic policy, or for fairness, or for both? This talk explains our current CGT rules, and looks at whether we should extend them. In particular, should extending the CGT rules be part of a left wing response to growing inequality in our country
