340 dancers to compete in premier NZ event

Press Release – Open Dance

16 October 2018
In Hamilton for the long weekend? So are 340 of New Zealand’s best dancers. Come and cheer them on as they take to a specially-built dance floor at Claudelands Arena.

With national titles up for grabs, this is the premier ballroom, Latin American and New Vogue event on the dance calendar.

It’s the fourth year the NZ Open Dance Championships – sponsored by Gold Ridge Marine Farm and with funding partner Hamilton City Council – has been held in the heart of the Waikato.

“It’s exciting to see this event grow – we have more competitors taking to the floor this year,” said NZFDT president, Auckland’s Erica Gunn.

“What’s even better is the growth in the number of juveniles and juniors coming from throughout New Zealand, which bodes well for the future of ballroom in this country,” she said.

Competitive dancers will have committed to hours of lessons and practice sessions, and worked hard to reach peak physical fitness to impress the 26 adjudicators from New Zealand and Australia.

But while it’s a competition for the dancers, it’s a glitzy and entertaining event for people to watch.

There’ll be special performances on Saturday evening by the internationally acclaimed hip hop crew Identity Dance Company, and on Sunday evening contemporary dancer Taniora Motutere.

There are daytime and evening sessions, with spectators able to come and go throughout the day from 9am.
