Following outstanding scholarship results, former ACG Parnell College student Raghav Ramachandran has accepted an offer to study medicine at Oxford University starting later this year.

Only 14 international students gain places in the course each year, which is ranked number two in the world.

Raghav, who was in Year 13 at ACG Parnell College last year, received NZQA scholarships in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Statistics; the Outstanding Scholarship in Calculus; and the New Zealand Outstanding Scholar Award.

He received a Top Achiever Scholarship from the University of Auckland and an Academic Excellence Entrance Scholarship from the University of Otago last year, as well as offers of study from the University of Queensland, Monash University and the University of Adelaide.

Inspired by the complexity of the human body, Raghav will start medical studies mid-way through this year. He is particularly interested in neuroscience, an interest sparked at school.

“The brain stoked my interest in medicine when I learnt about it during the Brain Bee Competition in Year 11,” he said. “I want to pursue medicine to learn more about how the brain works and the machinations of the whole human body.”

Alongside outstanding academic results, Raghav was fully immersed in life at school, playing basketball and badminton, and taking part in debating, Brain Bee and science competitions. He was a tutor, a prefect and co-head of the academic committee and also achieved a silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.

“ACG Parnell has given me many opportunities and support while I have attended and even after,” he said.

“The teachers have been greatly encouraging and willing to help me when I wished to do something extra and push myself, like competing in the NZ International Biology Olympiad or assisting me to learn Further Mathematics despite it not being a subject taught at our school.”
