Original Foods Baking Co Wins James & Wells IP Business Innovation Award at 2017 New Zealand Food Awards.

Wholesale baking company, Original Foods Baking Co (OFBC) has scored an award hat-trick this week with news that the Christchurch based factory has won the James & Wells IP Business Innovation Award at the New Zealand Food Awards (NZFA) last night (12.10.17). The win comes less than a week after OFBC won the titles of Champion Producer/Manufacturer (medium-large enterprise) and overall Supreme Winner (medium-large enterprise) at the Champion Canterbury Business Awards.

Now in its 26th year of business, OFBC produces over 90 products including cakes, slices, bites and donuts which are found in leading supermarkets, cafes, catering companies, restaurants and airline menus throughout NZ and the South Pacific. The company also collaborates with other wholesale customers such as Hell’s Pizza, Wendy’s, Aldi Australia, Foodstuffs and Progressiveto produce new, delicious products on their behalf.

OFBC Managing Director and owner, Jane Mayell spoke of the role innovation plays in the company,

“Pardon the pun, but we have an insatiable appetite for innovation. It is at the heart of everything we do and is firmly embedded in our culture, Jane said.

“Innovation not only drives productivity and growth but keeps us focused on long term prosperity. Just as importantly, it makes work an interesting, creative and enjoyable place for our 100+ full time and part time staff. We are always evolving.”

Over the past 12 months OFBC has undergone a major brand refresh, built a state-of-the-art $10m factory, produced three new products, improved its manufacturing processes and expanded its export business. Later this year, OFBC will open a new café and retail outlet at the company’s headquarters. The new venture will double as a test kitchen where customers can provide feedback on new recipes.

OFBC competed against five other finalists in their category and over 60 finalists in the overall awards which were held at SkyCity Hotel Auckland. The NZFAs celebrate the creativity, innovation and excellence and new initiatives in food and beverage production and manufacturing, identifying company leaders who inspire others to meet standards of excellence as well as the creative work of product innovators in packaging design, nutrition, enterprise, food safety and quality.
