Kelly Tarlton’s celebrates the unlikely father

This Father’s Day, SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s Auckland is celebrating Dads and all the unique contributions they make every day. Whilst we take this day to celebrate all Dads, Kelly Tarlton’s thinks there’s a particularly special dad from the underwater world which takes the crown …

… Did you know that male seahorses possess the remarkable ability to undergo pregnancy and give birth?

Male seahorses are equipped with a brood pouch and during mating, the female deposits her eggs into his pouch. The male then fertilises them internally and carries them until they hatch. Pregnancies can range between 10-25 days depending on the species, before thousands of fully formed, miniature seahorses are released into the water.

To celebrate this Father’s Day and the ocean’s most fascinating fathers, SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s welcomes dads to visit for FREE all weekend (2-3 September) with the purchase of a full-price ticket from the front desk. Simply download the voucher fromhttps://www.kellytarltons.co.nz/visitor-info/latest-news/father’s-day/ and present at front desk to redeem!

Seahorse Kingdom at Kelly Tarlton’s is home to some of the most magnificent seahorses from around the world, including the world’s only public display of the unique and wonderful Spiny Sea Dragons! Spiny Sea Dragons also have a similar style to seahorse where the female attaches eggs to the underside of the male’s tail. The eggs remain attached to males tail for four to six weeks until ready to hatch.

Seahorses are considered one of the most beautiful creatures in the sea, and unfortunately they are under threat from overfishing due to use in medicinal preparations, and general ocean degradation. Kelly Tarlton’s, as one of New Zealand’s leading conservation entities, has launched Seahorse Kingdom where visitors can be educated about and fall in love with these magical creatures.
