Top midget drivers return To Western Springs

Press Release – Western Springs Speedway
This weekend will see the best Midget drivers in the country return to Western Springs, with drivers registered to the central Auckland track clean-sweeping the podium positions at the New Zealand championships, held in Christchurch last weekend.

Although the national title has already been decided, there is still plenty to play for in the coming weeks for Midget drivers, with the North Island championship up for grabs this weekend as well as valuable points towards the Western Springs track championship, which is currently led by Brock Maskovich.

For the first time in since the turn of the century, Michael Pickens won back to back New Zealand championships after his victory in Huntly last season. Pickens has proven to be New Zealand’s fastest midget driver and can add the national title, his fifth, to his second place and top New Zealander in the International Midget Series over the Christmas/New Year period.

Second in the New Zealand championship last weekend was Brad Mosen. Somewhat surprisingly for the only driver who seems genuinely capable of matching Pickens for speed, it was only Mosen’s second podium finish in the New Zealand championships.

Third place went to Dave Gick. A relative new-comer to the sport, Gick is the defending track champion at Western Springs and his increased speed and luck across the international series saw him as a dark horse for the title, a result finally fitting of a promising start to his career.

Saturday night’s North Island title will see the newly crowned 1NZ, 2NZ and 3NZ chasing defending North Island champion Michael Brunt.

Race day sees gates open at 5pm with the first race getting underway at 6.30. Adults are $30 with kids under the age of 16 free with a paying adult. For more information, check out www.springsspeedway.com.
