More national title action this weekend at Western Springs

Press Release – Western Springs Speedway
New Zealand’s premier speedway, Western Springs Speedway, is set to again put a New Zealand Championship on the line this weekend, with the TQ Midgets looking to crown a 1NZ this weekend.

Hot off the back of the New Zealand Sprintcar championship at the last meeting on January 5, the ‘Pocket Rocket’ Three-Quarter midgets, which are typically powered by motorcycle engines, will assemble from all around the country with the ultimate prize on the line.

Currently Hawkes Bay-based cousins Craig and Duane Todd have dominated, holding the 1NZ and 2NZ tags respectively. But they will have a host of Western-Springs based competitors chasing them down for the honour.

The Todd cousins have contested several meetings at Western Springs this season in preparation for the national title meeting and whilst they have run near the front, they have by no means dominated the most competitive class at Western Springs, with six winners from eight feature races so far this season.

Top Auckland competitors include young brothers, Ryan and Scott Baker, both of whom have been to victory lane in the 2012/13 season, and the current 3NZ, Jared Taylor, who has looked very quick across the Christmas/New Year period. They highlight a line-up of 10 local drivers all capable of taking away the title.

Other on-track action includes the Midgets, who will be competing for their North Island championships, and the Sprintcars in what will be an action packed night of racing.

Race day sees gates open at 5pm with the first race getting underway at 6.30. Adults are $30 with kids under the age of 16 free with a paying adult. For more information, check out www.springsspeedway.com.
