Panmure homicide: 38-year-old arrested, taxi driver contacts police with evidence

Police have found the taxi driver who drove 27 year-old Nathan Albert from the city to Panmure in the early hours of New Year’s Day shortly before he was murdered. The driver contacted Police last evening and he has provided details which will assist the homicide investigation.
The Operation Terri inquiry team would still like to hear from anyone who was in the Panmure or Mt Wellington area and who may have seen a man wearing a light-coloured top and dark shorts, running from the Panmure area towards Sylvia Park around 4:15 -05:30 am on 1 January.

Police investigating the homicide of 27 year-old Nathan Albert have arrested a 38 year-old Panmure man who appear in the Auckland District Court yesterday charged with Crimes Act Assault. Mr Albert died after being stabbed in Pilkington Rd, Panmure shortly after 4am on New Year’s Day.
Detective Inspector Mark Benefield says the 38 year-old accused presented himself to Police on Wednesday. More serious charges may be laid as the investigation progresses. No weapon has been recovered and police still want to hear from anyone who has come across a knife or sharp instrument.
Police wish to speak to a taxi driver who sometime between 3.30am and 4.00am on Tuesday uplifted the victim Nathan Albert from the lower end of the Auckland Central Business District (In the vicinity of Fort Street, Fort Lane and Customs Street West) and then delivered him to Pilkington Road Panmure.

Police carrying out a homicide inquiry have identified the man who died in Panmure yesterday as 27-year-old Papatoetoe resident Nathan Albert. A man who was known to Mr Albert has contacted police and is assisting with the investigation. It is too early to say what the outcome of the discussions with this man will be.

Auckland City Police have launched a homicide investigation after a 27-year-old man died in Panmure’s Pilkington Road shortly after 4am. The area has been cordoned off and area inquiries and a scene examination are being carried out. Police are looking for anything that may have been discarded which could have been used as a weapon.
Detective Inspector Mark Benefield says it’s believed the dead man had lived in Papatoetoe but are firming up on his details.
Operation Terri, the name given to the homicide investigation, has set up an 0800 number – 0800 4 TERRI or 0800 4 83774 – for anyone who wants to pass on information to the investigation team.
Detective Inspector Benefield says the investigation is progressing after a long day of inquiries among the Pilkington Rd community and Police hope to release the name of the deceased tomorrow.
