In response to this story, a Housing New Zealand spokesperson says:

We encourage those involved with planting the garden to contact us so we put them in touch with an organisation that may be able to assist them with developing a local community garden.

Had they contacted us earlier, we would have happily explained that 16 Taniwha Street will have new houses built on it - therefore it is not an ideal site for a community garden. Housing New Zealand has employed contractors to maintain its vacant sections in Glen Innes so they are well maintained while the redevelopment plans are being worked on.

Several years ago Housing New Zealand worked with PERA (Panmure East Residents Association) to develop a community garden in Panmure for the local community.
