Homicide inquiry in Kawerau after fatal stabbing; 31-year-old charged

A 31-year-old man appeared in Whakatane District Court this morning charged following the fatal stabbing of a 23-year-old man in Kawerau last night.

Both the name of the accused and the victim have been suppressed by the court.

The man will re-appear on Wednesday. At this stage he is charged with assault.

Bay of Plenty Police have begun a homicide investigation after a fatal stabbing last night.

Police received a 111 call about the assault which took place at an address in Holyoake Crescent, Kawerau about 8pm.

Police arrived and found one woman and two men at the address. One of the men was dead with fatal injuries to his neck. A formal identification is yet to be established.

The residential address is under guard. A scene examination will take place today with forensic scientists. A forensic post mortem will also take place on 11 January.

A 31-year-old man will appear in court charged with assault today. More charges are likely.
