Cats kill rats which kill native birds. When did youever see a cat with a tui in her mouth?

So if 50 % of domestic cats don’t hunt then 50 % do – the reason native birds may only make up 1% of their kill is simple – they have been hunted to near extinction by pests like cats. As for releasing unwanted cats into wild colonies and supporting those colonies with food – that is like supporting wild colonies of stoats or ferrets, ecological stupidity. I have no objection to households having a single desexed cat that is kept indoors at night and as much as possible being kept in the owners property – like dogs are required too be. However if they live on the fringes of reserves or native bush then the best policy is no cat. Cat owners need to be little less arrogant – their moggies roam the neighbourhood killing bird life, fouling their neighbours vege patches, getting into garbage bags and being a general nusiance. Gareth you have my support.

Gareth Morgan needs to get over himself, native birds are killed by a multitude of reasons including possums stouts and rats and yes including feral cats. Native birds would only seldom be killed by the the family moggy. Cats do an important job of killing rats and mice.

This campaign of his is ridiculous, as cats are part of the Kiwi psyche – they provide many hours of companionship and enjoyment to many many kiwis.
