Press Release – Auckland District Health Board
With warm temperatures accompanied by high humidity, it’s timely to remind Aucklanders to protect themselves from the effects of heat.
Auckland Regional Public Health Service spokesperson Dr Denise Barnfather says that many people will not be aware of the health risks associated with the warm weather.
“Auckland’s hot summer weather can be a problem for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and those with medical conditions. We encourage people to check on elderly neighbours or family to make sure that they are okay and that they are able to keep cool and are drinking enough water in the heat,” says Dr Barnfather.
“The messages are common sense; stay out of the sun if you can, avoid strenuous activity, drink lots of cool water and wear light coloured, loose-fitting clothing. Keep your house as cool as possible to facilitate better sleep at night.”
Auckland Regional Public Health Service has public health advice and information available on its website. Visit http://www.arphs.govt.nz/health-information/healthy-environments/hot-weather for more information.
