News from NZ Police
All diversions have been lifted and all Southern Motorway lanes are now open following the truck crash at East Tamaki. But traffic into the rush hour may be heavier than usual as diverted vehicles are cleared.
The southern motorway was heavily congested following the truck crash, which closed all northbound lanes. Two cranes were needed to clear the scene. Northbound traffic was being directed off the motorway at Manukau/SH20. Those unfortunate enough to be stuck between SH20 and East Tämaki were being reduced to one lane and gradually directed off at East Tämaki – lights there were phase-altered to hasten this process.

Northbound drivers on Auckland’s Southern Motorway (State Highway 1) faced long delays after a truck crashed and rolled near the East Tamaki Road northbound off ramp this afternoon. Drivers heading north on SH1 were being diverted on to the Southwestern Motorway (SH20) at Manukau. The northbound on ramps to the Southern Motorway at Redoubt Road, Te Irirangi Drive and East Tamaki Road were closed.
All southbound lanes on the Southern motorway were open, but congestion was building up just past the Highbrook interchange as drivers slowed as they pass the crash scene.
“For their own safety, we ask drivers not to slow down to avoid any delays southbound on the Southern Motorway during the afternoon peak. There is a risk of bumper to bumper crashes if people become distracted as they pass the crash scene,” says the NZTA’s acting State Highways manager for Auckland and Northland, Steve Mutton.
