Billboard with Pope “highly offensive”

Press Release – Right To Life New Zealand Inc
A billboard depicting Pope Benedict xvi performing the marriage of an inter -racial male couple has been erected on Beach Rd, a busy highway in Auckland. The billboard, which is four and a half stories high, has been erected by Powershop, an electricity retailer owned by Meridian Energy, a State -Owned Enterprise.

It is highly offensive and insulting to Catholics and others in the community to lampoon the Pope. He is the respected religious leader of the Catholic Church which faithfully upholds the institution of marriage as being exclusively for one woman and one man.

The billboard is intended to promote support for the Marriage [Amendment] Bill of Labour Member of Parliament Louisa Wall. The Bill is currently before a Parliamentary Select Committee.

It is inappropriate for a State- Owned Enterprise to be getting involved in politics and taking a position on a Private Member’s Bill on a highly controversial social engineering issue that is before Parliament. It illustrates that the homosexual lobby is prepared to exploit and manipulate even State- Owned Enterprises in order to fulfil their agenda of inflicting same sex marriage on our community.

Right to Life calls upon the Minister of State Owned Enterprises to instruct Meridian Energy to have this highly offensive billboard removed immediately. ENDS
