Speed and alcohol blamed: teenager dies, 6 injured, when car crashes in Dargaville

A 19-year-old man died and six others were injured, three seriously, when a car crashed and overturned in Dargaville about 1am yesterday morning.

Seven men were crammed into the car, including two in the boot, and several passengers were flung from the car as it flipped onto its roof.

The Subaru sedan motor vehicle crashed while travelling northbound on Pouto Road, Aoroa, Dargaville.

Police say the driver lost control on a moderate ‘S’ bend and the car landed on its roof in a deep ditch at the side of the road. Police believe that alcohol and speed were contributing factors.

The man who died in the fatal crash was Anthony Charles Matich, aged 19, of Dargaville. Three male passengers were airlifted to Northland Base Hospital with serious injuries. Three other men were transported by Ambulance to Dargaville with moderate injuries.

At the time the weather was fine, road was dry and the traffic was light.
