Truck in flames on southern motorway causes backlog of traffic

News from NZ Police at 11.35am
A truck and trailer is on fire on the Southern Motorway in Auckland. The truck and trailer was travelling south when it started to smoke and burst into flames in the vicinity of the Ellerslie/Panumure off-ramp.

Traffic is being funnelled through a single lane.

This has caused a major backlog of south-bound traffic.

Motorists are urged to use alternative routes and avoid using this part of the motorway.

UPDATE from NZ police at 2.08pm
Traffic flow on the southern motorway in the last couple of hours has been extremely slow as a result of a truck and trailer unit being on fire.

Police have now cleared the scene and traffic both south and north bound is now flowing again.

There is still a tail of traffic remaining. Police anticipate this will be cleared up within the hour. Motorists are still urged to drive with caution.
