Team effort succeeds in saving man who fell into blowhole at Muriwai
Press Release – St John
A man in his 30s was airlifted to Auckland Hospital by Westpac Rescue Helicopter last night following a co-ordinated rescue effort at Muriwai Beach.
The man had fallen into the “blowhole” at Muriwai, making the rescue extremely challenging.
Muriwai First Responders were first to reach the man and a doctor at the scene was able to take pictures of the man’s injuries to send to St John paramedics near the scene to determine what rescue response was required.
St John Operations Team Manager, Patsy Carlyle, said:
“From the pictures we were able to see that we needed the NZ Fire Service high angle rescue team from Auckland City. They were able to extricate the man from his position and get him to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. It was a great team effort in very challenging conditions.”
