Gatecrasher stabs Whangarei partygoer with knife

News from NZ Police
A man was stabbed at a party at Kendon Place in Raumanga, Whangärei early this morning. When the party hosts turned away a gate crasher, he lunged at a 17 year party goer with a knife that cut across his stomach almost disembowelling him.

Luckily an ambulance was within 60 metres of the scene dealing with an other unrelated matter and paramedics were able to assist the victim. Had they not been so close, Police could have been dealing with a homicide.

A 19 year old male was arrested and appeared in the Whangärei District Court charged with Wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. His bail was opposed.

The victim is being cared for at Whangärei Hospital and was placed in an induced coma. His condition was described as stable.

At about 5.30 yesterday afternoon, Northland Police were called to a second stabbing incident at the Kaeo shops. A man had been stabbed in the back. He was flown by rescue helicopter to the Whangärei Hospital with a suspected punctured lung. His condition is described as status 2 (moderate to serious).

Police have a number of witnesses to speak to. Enquiries are continuing.
