Great South Road was closed at Richmond Drive tonight after a crash between a car and a truck. Police said the driver of the car was critically injured.

The male driver of the car involved in the crash between a car and a truck on Great South Rd, Mt Richmond has been cut free from his vehicle and will be transported to hospital.

His condition is still considered to be critical by ambulance staff.

Traffic is being diverted onto Mt Wellington Highway from Portage Road to the south and Vesty Drive, north of the scene.

Due to the position of the vehicles involved and the fact that one of them is a large truck, the diversions are expected to remain in place for several hours.
