Press Release – New Zealand Rugby League
In the final game of the third round of the Pirtek National Premiership the Counties Manukau Stingrays hosted the Wellington Orcas at Mt Smart. The Stingrays came into the round with two wins, while the Orcas had one and both were keen to assert their dominance on the competition. For a while the two teams were pretty evenly matched with each turning possession into points and the score at 6 all early in the first half but as the half wore on, the Orcas handling errors let them down and the Stingrays were quick to make use of the possession jumping out to a 22 – 6 lead at half time. The second half was more of the same with the Orcas scoring first but unable to build any pressure and eventually the Stingrays ran away with the game winning 44 points to 10.
Earlier the U85 kg Secondary Schools match between schools from the Student Horizons North Harbour Schools League competition had opened the evening. Whangaparaoa College returned to Mt Smart Stadium for their second Monday night rugby league game, this time against Glenfield College. Whangaparaoa who lost their first round match at the ground to Orewa College appeared to have benefited from their previous appearance and were the more composed in the first half, despite facing a Glenfield College team that had opened the competition with two wins. Whangaparaoa’s team work on attack and support in defense meant they were never threatened even when Glenfield were close to their line, and they were 18 – nil up with only minutes on the clock before Glenfield finally breached their defenses to score their only converted try. It was a much improved performance by Whangaparaoa who may yet have another Mt Smart appearance should they make the finals.
A big thank you to everyone who took part and to everyone who came along to support their team.
