Green Party launching campaign against child poverty in Papakura

Press Release – Green Party
Following a successful launch last week in Wellington, the Green Party is bringing the Take the Step – Be a Champion for Children campaign to end child poverty to Auckland, with an event tomorrow morning at Edmund Hillary School in Papakura.

Edmund Hillary School was recently featured on TV3’s Campbell Live for its volunteer-led breakfast programme for hungry kids. Tomorrow, its pupils will take the first steps in the latest fight against child poverty by putting their colourful footprints on a banner we’ll take to Parliament in support of New Zealand’s poorest kids.

The initial target of the campaign is winning support for Metiria Turei’s Bill to replace the In-work Tax Credit with a child payment for all NZ children who need it.

The bill is likely to begin its first reading in Parliament today.

Ending child poverty was a priority issue for the Green Party in the 2011 election, and the Take the Step campaign will be one of our top political priorities during this political term.
