Auckland couple arrested for ‘food poisoning’ fraud in Thames and Whitianga
News from NZ Police
Whitianga Police have arrested two people after a local café promptly reported a woman attempting to obtain money by falsely claiming that she had suffered food poisoning on an earlier visit.
The arrest followed similar reports from Thames on Friday. On those occasions a young woman had approached several cafes claiming that she had eaten there recently and gotten sick afterwards. Some businesses paid her a refund in cash. They later realised that they had been cheated but by the time they informed the Police the woman had left town.
The offending was featured in media reports last Saturday. A 26 year old Auckland woman has been arrested and will appear in the Thames District court next week charged with fraud offences. A thirty year old Auckland man has also been charged with assisting her and appears at Thames as well.
The Police are aware that this couple have travelled to Thames, Whangamata and Whitianga and want to hear from any premises which may been targeted by this couple.
