Workers join picket at Ports of Auckland as three-week strike begins
Press Release – Maritime Union of New Zealand
Ports of Auckland workers started their strike on Friday morning at 7am by attending a large meeting at the Maritime Club in Anzac Avenue. The workers are putting on a round the clock picket at the port that will run for the strike period following the conclusion of this morning’s meeting.
Maritime Union National President Garry Parsloe says there is a resolute mood amongst members.
“Members are very aware of the issues, the contracting out and casualization that threatens their jobs and their families livelihoods.”
He says upcoming strike notices could be withdrawn if the port management drops plans to contract out jobs.
Supporters are welcome to join port workers at any time on their picket at Teal Park on Tamaki Drive.
Families are being invited to come down during weekends where there will be entertainment, activities and something to eat.
A new donation line 0900OURPORT had been set up where supporters of the workers could call to make an automatic $5 donation.

The employees have a job they like, paying good money. That is why they are there. A self important, militant union is leading them astray. Management are still learning how to do their job and have been trapped by their mistakes (We are all human). The publicity given to this dispute has embarrassed both sides and neither can move without losing face. There are many spectators revelling in it. They will not help. Is the union representing the worker or justifying its own existence? What the worker wants is a secure job. Is that correct? REMEMBER there will always be someone else better off.(The grass is greener on the other side of the fence.)
We are stuck with Corporate Greed this week. We can not solve the world’s problems with one stroke so let us take it one step at a time. If we give the watersiders regular, secure work that is a big step. One very private question,(1)how much do I really NEED and(2) how much do I want just because someone else is getting it. DO NOT tell anyone the answer because part (2) is childish greed and we all like to think that we are big boys now. We do not suffer from Corporate Greed. Think about it alone. (1 Corinthians 13:11)
