Ethnic peoples forums on Auckland’s future

Auckland Council’s Ethnic Peoples Advisory Panel are to host two half day forums for ethnic people to give their views on how to meet the Mayor’s vision of Auckland becoming the world’s most liveable city.

Ethnic leaders and members of ethnic communities are invited to attend any of the forums.

In March 2011, the Mayor appointed 12 members to the panel, which has been established to advise the council on the issues facing our ethnic communities, now and in the future. They will be on hand to hear views and ideas on how to make Auckland the most liveable city for all ethnic communities.

The forums are a way for the Auckland Council’s Ethnic Advisory Panel to be better informed in their ongoing advice to the council, and pinpoint issues, present and future, facing ethnic communities throughout Auckland.

The Auckland Unleashed discussion document outlines ways to use our strengths to improve economic performance, contribute to the national economy and quality of life for all Aucklanders The two forums will be an opportunity for ethnic communities to discuss and share their thoughts on:

• Our people: harnessing what we already have and improving our skills for the future;
• Our environment: keeping what’s special, building on that and selling our unique lifestyle to the world;
• Our innovation: mustering our creative talents and delivering on our innovative ideas.

This is an opportunity for people of different ethnicities to discuss their views on key social, economic, environmental, cultural and urban growth issues, with members of the council’s first Ethnic Peoples Advisory Panel.

Auckland Council staff will be present to provide technical advice and information.

The Office of Ethnic Affairs supports the forums and encourages ethnic communities to participate actively.

Feedback from these discussions will be used to inform other plans and strategies that are being developed throughout the year.
